Grades

Grades

Although each teacher may have his/her own way to assigning grades to an assignment, project, exam, or overall trimester grade, it is critical that students understand the manner in which they are graded and track their progression to avoid falling below a 2.0 GPA ("C" average).

How to Calculate GPA

The GPA is an average of all grades received using a point system. Simply add up the points earned for each letter grade to determine the GPA. Any CNUSD student can also find the GPA in Q Student Connect.

A = 4

B = 3

C = 2

D = 1

F = 0

Difference between "Term GPA" and "Cumulative GPA"

"Term GPA" is the average GPA points earned for just one grading period, such as a the current semester.

"Cumulative GPA" is the overall average GPA points earned for the entire two years at NIS.

How GPA's Impact Students

  • Class Placement - GPAs are used as part of our decision making to determine which students need additional support classes, which may mean that an elective is removed from the student schedule to add a support class in a certain subject, or general Success Class support.
  • Sports - Students must have a 2.0 Term GPA to play the Intermediate Sports Program; Students must have a 2.0 Term GPA during 8th Grade Trimester 3 to participate in High School Sports
  • 7th and 8th Grade Activities - Students must have a minimum GPA (varies according to event) to participate, typically a 2.0
  • 8th Grade Promotion - Students must have a Cumulative GPA of 1.5 to be eligible to attend the Promotion/Graduation Ceremony

Report Cards & Progress Reports

The school-year is broken down into two parts, called semesters. A report card is sent out upon the completion of each quarter (October and February) and also a final report at the end of semester (December and June).  Progress Reports are sent out in the middle of each quarter to students who have a chance to earn a "D" or "F" in a given class (Progress Reports are not required for students who have a "C" or better; however some teachers issue them to all students, in case of future concern that the grade may digress.
